Yoga, Girl!
A balanced body swings better

by Yoga Instructor Polly
Have you ever tried to eat a peanut butter sandwich without jelly?  It’s okay, but it sure sticks to the roof of your mouth. It’s also way more yummy with a little jelly smoosh. Golf is the peanut butter. Yoga is the jelly. Huh?

Okay, okay, just look at it like this. When we use our body to enjoy a repetitive sport (i.e. golfing) we eventually will overuse certain muscles and create an imbalance, which can lead to injury or worse… a messed up golf swing. Yuck. I vote we all add a little bit of yoga to sweeten our game.

A simple yoga practice, even just 10 minutes, can change your body, help you stay calm under pressure, and maybe even lower your golf score. Aaah, now it sounds yummy. Yoga basically creates space. You naturally build strength without pounding the body, while creating flexibility. A strong and flexible body is a truly healthy body.  A healthy body is a balanced body. A balanced body is one that can keep you golfing, and feeling good, long after the last putt drops.

I have created a short yoga sequence to help open the shoulders and upper back, while building strength throughout the core for a smooth swing. We will stretch and work the hamstrings, the most important muscles in maintaining posture and preventing low back strain, and I added a few twists just for golfers.

My golf game is rather uh… well it’s like the pb & j that got traded for a cupcake. I have a lot to learn, and that is all part of the fun.

See you on the course!

Polly demonstrates several positions that will help you create more flexibility for a better golf swing.
The 10-minute yoga sequence focuses on shoulders and upper back.
